We are back
Hello,
Thank you for hanging in. I have not been active since February. I took a break to write a book and used that time to rethink this newsletter. I wanted to retain the best aspects of what was already here and reach a more diverse readership — hence the consolidation you may have noticed on the newsletter page.
The Unblinded Writer is about how language works, how systems work, and how people navigate both — some with more friction than others. Some essays will come from 27 years at a newsroom desk. Some from what a screen reader teaches about sentence rhythm that sighted editors never hear. Some from the systems all of us move through daily, which nobody notices until they fail.
One essay every two weeks. The first arrives next week: why the best editors are invisible by design, and what three decades behind the desk taught me about disappearing from the page.
If your reading priorities have changed since we last met, please do unsubscribe — no hard feelings at all. But if you are staying, I am genuinely grateful for your company. Thank you for being here.
